Professor D.S Enomate has reminded the Igbo people of Nigeria that the ongoing agitation for Biafra will not give them Ojukwu's socialist Nivarna they crave.
He stated this while addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Washington DC, USA which was well attended by leading US congressional leaders.
While speaking at the event themed 'Security Challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa'' he called attention to the Boko Haram menace which has killed no fewer than 20,000 people since the insurgency began about seven years ago.
Prof Enomate told the US Congressional leaders that another armed confrontation is looming in Nigeria, this time in the South-East resulting from the ongoing agitation for a breakaway state of Biafra.
The first Nigeria-Biafra war, he noted, killed about 3 million Nigerians while the Islamist insurgency in the North East has so far killed over 20,000 and more lives are still on the line.
He said: ''The ongoing Islamist insurgency in the North-East has killed no fewer than 20,000 Nigerians since the armed struggle to actualize a sovereign Islamic state began years ago. The carnage is still ongoing this time with undiminished intensity. Although the military has consistently said the armed group has been technically defeated but this appears a far cry from the truth for there have been sustained attacks by the group resulting in so many civilian deaths in the volatile northeast.''
''Another armed struggle to actualize a sovereign Biafran State is again looming by the day whose activities are only in the Nigeria's South-East. The reasons tendered by the agitators are the marginalization of the region in the scheme of things and lopsided appointments by the Buhari government which has given birth to calls for a return to fiscal federalism via a restructuring of Nigeria.''
'The Biafra agitators have cited other reasons which include insecurity in the region perpetrated by Fulani herders which is also seen in other regions - the Middle Belt, South-South region where I come from and the South West.''
''The only foreseeable solution is for the world to prevail on the Federal Government for a restructuring of the country. Biafra will not give the Igbo people in Nigeria Ojukwu's socialist Nirvana. Restructuring of the country where every region will control its resources and develop at its own pace will control its security via state police will settle all form of grievances and agitations''
On the tension the present agitations have created in the country he said, '' Today Nigerians are gripped with fear and worries about the unknown. There is every pointer to the fact that the Rwanda-like genocide looms as a result of hate comment and speeches employed by the agitators for Biafra in the social media. Only recently some northern rascals under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Youths issued an eviction notice to Igbo to vacate their region - the sign of worse things to come sparked off by the ongoing agitations for Biafra.''
''Hate speech and comments have set the country on fire where each tribe now regard other tribes as enemies. Nigeria has never been this divided and I dare say, is only sitting on the keg of a gunpowder which is waiting to explode any moment from now as a result of the subversive activities of the agitators. What we actually stand in need of at this point in our nation's history is a restructuring of the country and not division in any form or a break-up''
'It has in deed become absolutely necessary to call for a prompt intervention in the Nigerian situation to forestall another Rwanda-like genocide considering the humanitarian catastrophe that will follow'' Prof Enomate added.
