GOVERNOR El-Rufai of Kaduna State has called on Nigeria to resist forces who are trying to divide the country through hate speeches and divisive activities.
Speaking in Kaduna, North Central Nigeria through his spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, the governor called on Nigerians to rise against forces, voices, and promoters of division for a stable and peaceful nation and develop the economy.
He particularly decried and raise the alarm on the dangers posed by hate messages and writings across the country which he says has set one region against the other.
In his remarks at the opening of “ICPR/UNDP Workshop on Conflict
Prevention and Peace Building in Nigeria,” held in Kaduna, he said that Nigeria’s diversity which should serve as a source of strength has been manipulated by many merchants of conflicts for pernicious reasons.
He noted that Kaduna had 12 religious and ethnic conflicts in
different parts of the state in the span of 37 years, adding that no one was ever punished for any of the crises.
He stressed that, reports of Judicial Commissions of Inquiries have
not been implemented in Kaduna State ,leaving perpetrators of such crimes to work free in the society.
According to him, it has led to a recurrent cycle of impunity and more violence in the state.
He explained further that one of the steps taken by the present Kaduna State government was to pass a law to establish the Kaduna State Peace Commission that will take proactive measures in developing strategies that would promote peace and harmonious co-existence.
He said contrary to the false assertions from some quarters, the government of Kaduna State does not seek to muzzle the free press or journalists in the performance of their duty.
He, however, explained that it is government’s constitutional mandate to protect against actions that disrupt the society such as ‘irresponsible journalism’ that spread falsehood, publishes inciting stories and turn the people against one another.
