ECOMIG Contingent Commander in The Gambia , Col. Margeth Njie, has tasked Gambians on patriotism as the country's army becomes professionally-oriented.
He made the call while speaking to newsmen on Saturday at an event organised by the Fourth Battalion of the Gambian Armed Forces in Kanilai, the hometown of the deposed Gambian dictator, Yahya Jammeh.
Col Njie urged the Gambian civil populace to cultivate the spirit of patriotism by having trust in the country's armed forces.
He said: “If we the ECOMIG Forces here built that trust in The Gambian Forces, I see no reason why Gambian population cannot trust their own forces.”
Speaking further, he pointed out that, “Part of our mandate as ECOMIG Forces is to work towards rebuilding confidence between local populace and members of The Gambia Armed Forces and this initiative is in line with that mandate. We are glad to come here and support our Gambian brothers in this very good initiative.”
On the military ties between his home country, the neighbouring Senegal and The Gambia the ECOMOG Commander said both countries have a lot in common ranging to culture to others while calling attention to the similar training they had together which speak volumes for their professionalism.
“They were being trained together with the Senegalese Forces, so they have the same professional background and I am quite sure in the near future we will see the result,” he remarked.
However, he rounded off by urging members of the Gambian Armed Forces to stay permanently away from politics and confined its self to statutory of defending the country.,
