THE United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, has broken silence on hate speeches and crimes and urged a massive crackdown on the purveyors and promoters anywhere under the sun.
He reiterated call for tolerance, respect for one another and the importance of recognizing diversity.
He made the call on Wednesday while speaking to newsmen at the UN headquarters in New York.
He urged people across the world to speak out openly without fear and favour against the use of hate speeches in whatever form and urged a massive crackdown by countries' security agents adding that the legitimate government and authorities of all countries must do everything humanly possible to stop it.
Speaking further, the UN Chief Scribe said: “Racism, Xenophobia, anti-Semitism or Islamophobia is, as I mentioned yesterday, poisoning our societies.
“It is absolutely essential for us all to stand up against them everywhere and every time,” he added.
Speaking on the protest at the weekend in the US where a weekend protest and counter-protest over the removal of civil war statue in Charlottesville, Virginia, sparked discussions about race, Guterres said, “these demons are appearing a little bit everywhere.”
Guterres also said he was proud that has done much to create values of enlightenment, tolerance, respect for one another and the importance of recognition of diversity.
“To be able to stand for these values and at the same time, to condemn all forms of irrationality undermining those values is essential, be it in the United States, or everywhere else in the world,” he added.
