The attack on the veteran Nigerian singer, Charles Oputa, alias Charlyboy, the Convener of #ResumeOrResignprotest against President Muhammadu Buhari has received international attention and condemnation.
This was contained in a statement issued by a Diasporan group ''Nigeria Shall Be Free'' by its spokesperson, Iyoha John Darlington, a Niger Deltan born social activist, public commentator on national and global issues.
He expressed his outrage with the attack on the Nigerian singer who he said has done no wrong by demanding Buhari's resignation if he can not return to Nigeria to resume duties for which he was elected by Nigerians.
Iyoha John Darling made the remark in a statement released by the group in Bergen, Norway on Wednesday while addressing a cross-section of Nigerians from the southern part of the country.
He called attention to the agitations across the country by different ethnic nationalities which he blamed on leadership failure. The peoples' confidence in the government of the day has been weakened which is breeding ground for an imminent revolution.
He said: '' Today, there is no denying or gainsaying the fact that our country is at the crossroads which has given rise to various agitations by different ethnic nationalities. In the South-East, you have a group of separatists agitating for Biafra, in the old Mid-West region now Edo and Delta States, another group made up of eminent personalities comprising former governors from the two states, leaders of thought from the region have threatened to declare secession to be known as the Bendel Republic using every known diplomatic means to press home its demand while a coalition of oil militants have also shown willingness and threats to declare the Republic of Niger Delta.''
''In the southwest, many groups are also calling for the Republic of Oduduwa. These threats should by no means be taken lightly. You do not need to retain the services of a seer to tell you that the ship of revolution has set sail in Nigeria''
''I think it is high time we sat together to address the burning issues that make us differ which have given rise to these agitations. A couple of weeks ago barely after the issue of eviction notice was served the Igbos to vacate the northern parts of Nigeria, another anti-Igbo scenario unfolded via a hate song which is capable of unleashing another Rwandan-like genocide on Igbos living in the region''
''Fellow countrymen what shall we do now under the existing circumstances? Why has the government of the day paid deaf ears to the repeated calls for a restructuring of the country to make the ongoing agitations die a natural death? We cannot continue to fold our hands and allow a particular region of Nigeria to dictate the tone of our political future. Something must be done to save ourselves from the whims and caprices of internal neo-colonialist forces which have resolved as it is today to keep the rest of the country under permanent subjugation''
''You would all recall that Buhari prior to his ascension to power, did ask late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to resign on the ground of incapacitation, if he could say that then why is he finding it difficult to throw in the towel when it is very obvious he can no longer lead the country on health grounds?''
''Charlyboy did no wrong for asking him to return or simply resign to enable another competent person take charge. There is no denying the fact that a lot of things are going on marvelously as a result of leadership failure. President Buhari was not elected to rule over Nigeria from here in Europe. Under no guise should Abuja House in London be an extension of Aso Rock Presidential Villa.''
'' Ladies and gentlemen, may I append my opinion to Charlyboy's by calling on the President to honourably resign as obtains in other developed societies? I repeat with all the emphasis at my command that Charlyboy has done no wrong by leading a peaceful protest demanding the return of our President who has spent close to 100 calendar days overseas while the business of governance back home suffers which is taking a sad toll on the living conditions of our people at home''
