There are allegations that men of the Nigeria Police Force, in the Lagos and Ibadan axis, are now harassing, intimidating, and forcing innocent Nigerians who go about their lawful business activities, to unlock their mobile phones for searching.
It was reliably gathered that some Policemen would flout privacy rights of law abiding citizens, by stopping and searching their phones, without recourse to legal processes.
Although Post-Nigeria was not able to confirm the motive behind the “phone search”, as all efforts made by Post-Nigeria to speak with the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, on the matter, proved abortive in the last 24-hours.
In an exclusive interview with a victim, one Tejuosho Olalekan, a graduate of Urban and Regional Planning from Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile Ife, he indicated that it is “one experience too many”.
Narrating his story he said: ”I went to the market in Yaba, Lagos State, to buy fabrics. The Policemen who were stationed along the road for a stop and search operation stopped the bike I boarded, and asked what was in my bag, and I told them I had fabrics in it.
“I was further ordered to open my bag which I did, and they saw fabrics, buttons, threads, needles. They asked if I was a tailor, I answered in the affirmative. They later demanded an Identity card, which I produced instantly.
“Before I knew what was happening, I was ordered to unlock my Ipad phone for scrutiny. My prompt refusal to do that, knowing that it was illegal, prompted the Policemen numbering not fewer than three, to start intimidating, brutalising, and harassing me.
“I was being forced to enter into their unmarked vehicle to an unknown destination, but I stood my ground. They could have abducted me, if not for the intervention of passers-by who came to my rescue.”
Post-Nigeria recalls vividly, that earlier this year, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, in charge of Zone II, Kayode Aderanti, had warned Police operatives against harassing innocent Nigerians.
Aderanti who spoke during the then familiarisation visit to the Lagos Police Command at Ikeja, said that it was illegal for Police operatives to search phones of a passers-by.
“Some of them (Police) operate in unmarked vehicles, harassing people and searching through their phones. That must stop, as violators will be severely dealt with.
“The current Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, has zero tolerance for corruption and official misconduct.
“Whosoever requests money for bail or to register people’s complaints, is on his own and they will be tackled appropriately. I warn again, don’t demand gratification from members of the public.”
The Lagos State Police PRO, Dolap Badmus, has shed more light on the issue of Police operatives searching passers-by phones.
In her words: “Your phone is private, it is your private property, because people do a lot of private stuff on their mobile phones, so it is wrong. Police Officers have no right to do that, except there is a reasonable ground to do so”.
