A Legislative Aide to Senator Dino Melaye, Abubakar Sadiq, has said that investigations they carried out, revealed that many dead persons were among the 188,588 registered voters, that purportedly signed the recall documents of the Senator.
Abubakar, while addressing a Press Conference in Lokoja, at the weekend, alleged that the collated signatures for the recall exercise, were forged at the Kogi State Government House, in Lokoja, and “fraudulently” forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
“Amongst the dead was a prominent and former Gubernatorial aspirant of our great party, late Chief Rotimi Obadofin of blessed memory, from Ijumu Local Government Area, precisely its Gbede axis”, he said.
He added that, in Lokoja Local Government Area, dead people, such as one Abdullahi Abubakar (aka Sarki), his immediate younger sister, Halima Lawi Abubakar, and one Ibrahim Adama of Unit Code 021 Adankolo Ring Road, in Ward A of Lokoja, were among those that reportedly signed for the recall exercise.
Abubakar further alleged that the recall exercise was hatched by the State Government, because it was not comfortable with the manner Senator Melaye had been vocal against the alleged non-payment of workers and pensioners for 15 months, as well as the closure of all tertiary institutions in the State.
He wondered why those in the recall exercise could claim to have garnered over 188,000 signatures, when the entire votes cast for all candidates during the 2015 Senatorial election, was 111,000.
“Should INEC proceed on verification process, they cannot get 5% of the total figures forged, because those names and signatures were collated by proxy in various homes and the government house”, he said.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mrs Petra Akinti Onyegbule, debunked the allegation that the signatures for the recall exercise were collated at the government house.
She urged Dino and his men to stop panicking, and wait for the verification exercise which INEC had already fixed for July 3.
