The Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of being behind the attack on Chief Ademola Adeleke’s campaign train in Gbongan, the headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Area of the state.
The PDP in a statement issued on Sunday by its state Chairman, Mr. Soji Adagunodo, claimed that hoodlums believed to be working for the APC attacked the PDP’s campaign train in Gbongan and also at Ode Omu on Saturday in their efforts to frustrate the party’s candidate in the July 8 by-election to fill the Osun West Senatorial District’s vacant seat at the Senate.
He said that hoodlums, who were armed with cutlasses, guns and other dangerous weapons invaded the campaign venue and inflicted injuries on some persons before they were eventually resisted by some residents of the town, who repelled the attack.
The PDP chairman also said that some vehicles were vandalised by the hoodlums but stated that the attack would have been worse but for the rain which started at the same time.
He, however, said the party would not retaliate nor foment trouble but stated that its candidate was focused on working hard to win the by-election to show that his popularity was based on the love the electorate had for him and his late brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke.
But when contacted on the telephone, the state’s APC spokesperson, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said he was not in Gbogan or Odeomu on Saturday and could therefore not comment on it.
He gave our correspondent the telephone number of the state Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Rasaq Salinsile. However, the secretary did not pick repeated calls put across to his telephone by our correspondent.
He did not also respond to the text message sent to his phone number as of the time of filing this report.
