Every Southerner must henceforth strive to become not only a follower but a disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra in a bid to find a lasting solution to the recurrent problem bedeviling Nigeria, IYOHA JOHN DARLINGTON, The Nigerian Voice columnist and fiery social critic declared in Paris, France over the weekend.
Kanu, he said, has brought a new innovation in the way an average Southerner in Nigeria thinks considering the irreparable damage done to Nigeria by Nigeria's past and present leaders of northern extraction.
He made the disclosure in Paris, while addressing a cross-section of Nigerians at an event themed 'Nigeria in doldrums, the way forward.''
The social critic remarked that Southerners have been shortchanged on the scheme of things especially under the Buhari-led administration which has never been in Nigeria's political history.
He said: ''There is no denying the fact that Nigerians of Southern extraction have no say in the Nigerian project and were not even conscious of this until the agitation for Biafra started by the Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra.''
''Southerners have before now been condemned to the whims and caprices of the northern overlords who compel obedience from us through the instrumentality of the Hausa-Fulani dominated security agencies. This has been going on for a very long time unawares until the advent of Nnamdi Kanu.''
On marginalisation, he said, ''there is no region in the entire Southern Nigeria which is not marginalised. The Yorubas who have many times have a shot at the Presidency have also suffered marginalisation in a measure seeing that they are only allowed to eat from the crumbles fell off the table of the self-styled Fulani-Hausa overlords''
Speaking further, he said ''June 12 would go down in history as the day Nigerians took a shortcut to nationhood as Nigerians irrespective of their political and religious divides spoke with one voice as a nation and as a people but like a marriage, the Supreme wishes of Nigerians were again bastardized by the northern overlords who often dictate and control the fate and destiny of Nigerians of Southern extraction''
'' Irked by these anomalies Nnamdi Kanu was probably left with no option but to begin an agitation to free his people on the east of the Niger who have been seemingly condemned to a permanent subjugation.''
On the Yorubas, he said the North uses them as willing tools to advance the northern agenda by feeding them with crumbs which ought not to be after all.
''The southern minorities, have never been allowed to have a shot or a say in the leadership of Nigeria and the only person from the southern minority in the person of former President Goodluck Jonathan was harassed out of power via threats that ''the dogs and baboons would be soaked in blood'' - a statement credited to General Muhammadu Buhari as the leader of the then Nigeria's leading opposition party, the All Progressives Congress''
Kanu's agitation and demand for secession have indeed brought a new way of thinking among Southern Nigerians especially among the minorities as co-travelers in Nigeria's circuitous journey to nationhood.
His words: ''Southern minority tribes have now been reminded by Kanu's agitation for Biafra of the deprivations they have suffered over the years. That is why you see different groups have been springing up in the Niger Delta region calling to mind the activities of militant groups such as the Niger Delta Avengers and others''
On the way forward for Nigeria, the foreign-based social critic urged the Federal Government to urgently implement the resolution of the 2014 Confab which will address these problems if Nigeria is ever to remain one as anything short of this will intensify the call for a break up which no force on earth could stop.
