“We are not treated like Nigerians. After the war, we are supposed to be treated as one Nigeria, but here, we are still haunted by the war that ended over 47 years ago.', Akwa Ibom community leader, simply identified as Ettedung has lamented.
The follows the neglect suffered by the community which has been isolated since federal soldiers blew up the only bridge linking their villages.
However, the communities were elated in joy following Governor Udom Emmanuel flagged off the construction of link roads and plan to reconstruct the bridge which links their villages with neighbouring Abia State that was blown up in the heat of Nigeria-Biafra Civil War.
The bridge in question which links Obot Akara in Akwa Ibom State with Umuahia was reportedly blown up by the then Third Marine Commando of the Nigerian Army under the command of Olusegun Obasanjo the then leader of the Nigerian troops to prevent the advancing Biafra from accessing the communities.
Speaking further Ettedung said, “The federal military government, headed by General Yakubu Gowon (retd.) had assured massive reconstruction, rehabilitation and reconciliation, necessitating in the establishment of NYSC, but our community is left without any form of consideration.”
