Some prominent Lagosians among who are the sitting governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, Oba Akiolu of Lagos, former Deputy Governor of Lagos have revealed who the real owners of Lagos are.
In separate interviews with them by Nigerian Tribune, Governor Ambode minced no words by drawing facts from history who the true owners of Lagos are.
He said although Lagos as a state represents mini-Nigeria where all ethnic nationalities that make up the Federation of Nigeria are accommodated, that however does not erode or deny the fact that Lagos has its real indigenous owners which comprise the Binis and the Awori.
He said: ''Going down memory lane it was important to recall how the Awori played an important role in the evolution of what is referred to as Lagos today.''
“The same applies to the evolution of the Eko Royalty with the coming of the Bini from present-day Edo Stateand even the momentous role played by the Tappa in the making of our dear state,” he said.
In a similar vein, recall Oba Akiolu of Lagos was quoted as saying that the real owners of Lagos are the Bini, a position which was also corroborated by the governor pf Lagos State above.
Tribune also reports that '' in agreement with the governor’s view, the first Town Clark of the Lagos City Council, Senator Habib Fasinro, who is in his 90’s, as well as a former Minister of Works, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, said those behind the claim that Lagos is a no man’s land are ignorant.
'They said such a claim was not only misleading but confrontational, as same abused the history of the indigenous people of Lagos such as the Awori, Egba, Bini, Ijesa, Nupe, Brazilian returnees, among others.'
