When the British wanted to exile King Jaja, they tricked him that he would be taken to London to meet with the British Crown, whom he had assisted to quell the Ashanti uprising.
His Dibia told him that if he steps out, he will come back as a corpse. Jaja told the British what his Dibia said, and they laughed it off.
Jaja arrived the ship, the British arrested him and tried him in Accra, Ghana, then took him to London for some time, where he met Queen Victoria and was her guest in Buckingham Palace. After some other turbulent history, he was exiled to Saint Vincent in the West Indies. Plans were also made for him to be relocated to Barbados.
In 1891, Jaja was granted permission to return to Opobo. The British were excited that the Dibia would be proved a fake. However, King Jaja died on his way back to Africa, allegedly poisoned with a cup of tea.
When the choice is between your Dibia and the British, listen to your Dibia. Secondly, whenever your liberty is abridged, stay away from your captors’ cup of tea.
