The executive Governors of Eastern Nigerian states have agreed to hold an emergency meeting over Nnamdi Kanu’s bail conditions, AljazirahNigeria has learned.
The scheduled meeting will enable Governors to deliberate on how to meet up with the stringent and politicized bail conditions.
AljazirahNigeria gathered from sources that the governors are not happy over the harsh bail conditions and may be considering political and legal measures to tackle the federal government.
Also a close aide to one of the governors said the governor’s feel it is a slap on the Igbo nation.
“The young man deserves equal right to justice like other Nigerians. Why would such stringent bail conditions be meted to him? Our governors are shocked at the news. It is on record now that an Igbo man is now the only Nigerian who has been given the most stringent bail condition in history,” the aide.
The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday granted bail to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony.
Trial Justice Binta Nyako said her decision to release Kanu on bail was based on health grounds.
According to reports, the court held that Kanu must produce three sureties, including a “highly respected and recognized Jewish leader”.
According to the court, aside a Jewish leader, Kanu must also produce a “highly placed person of Igbo extraction such as a Senator”, as well as “a highly-respected person who is resident and owns landed property in Abuja”. Each of the sureties are to deposit N100million each. As part of his conditions for bail, Kanu, was expressly barred from attending any rally or granting any form of interview.
Also, the judge ordered Kanu to deposit his international passport including his British passport with the court, adding that the court should on monthly basis be furnished with a progress report on his health.
AljazirahNigeria learnt the judge adjourned till July 11 and 12 for continuation of trial.
The IPOB leader has been returned to Kuje Prison pending perfection of his bail conditions.
Kanu was reportedly arrested in Lagos on October 18, 2015 by Department of State Service (DSS).
Also, reacting to the bail terms granted Kanu, IPOB described the bail conditions as “childish, political and funny”.
