President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to make anti-corruption and accountability the fulcrum of his administration, has hit the brick wall, over the refusal of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, to account for funds that were stolen, but recovered by the Commission.
Recall, that Magu had appeared before the Senate on March 15, and failed to reveal the exact sum of money recovered from looters by the anti-graft agency under him.
Magu, when asked by Senator Duro Faseyi, how much the Commission had recovered so far under him, was unable to give a definite answer to the Senate’s question.
Senator Duro Faseyi had asked Magu: “How much funds has been recovered since you took charge of the Commission?” Magu reportedly said: “I don’t know how much. It is difficult to give report on how much has been recovered from the fight against corruption. It is very difficult for me to say.”
Elsewhere, Post-Nigeria learnt that Human Rights Activist, Femi Falana, and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu’s tactical support for Magu, to be confirmed as the substantive Chairman of the EFCC by the Senate, is allegedly connected to the unholy romance the duo are having with the anti-graft agency.
Speaking exclusively to Post-Nigeria, a top Presidential source said: ”Falana has corruptly benefited from various heads of the EFCC, by acting as an intermediary for massive rewards for interventions in high profile matters, on account of his false perception as a vocal anti-corruption crusader, when he is indeed profiteering from the fight against corruption, by currying favours from every head of the EFCC, since the time of Ribadu and Waziri.”
“Can he account for his superfluous wealth only from legal briefs as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria? Is he not receiving money corruptly by underhand dealings on corruption cases? Is Falana not aware that suspects are paying massive bribes to IPOs, in order to either have their charges reduced, or simply from avoidance of the negative image and trauma that an EFCC trial is designed to bring on suspects.”
He added: “We advise Falana and the likes of Prof. Itse Sagay, to rather call for the resignation of Magu, and setting up of a Commission for a holistic investigation into the affairs of the EFCC, under the tenure of Ibrahim Magu.
“This enquiry should offer witnesses protection to volunteer information on how they were threatened to part with huge amounts of money, and locked up with renewable court orders, until they settled the IPOs.”
Meanwhile, other sources alleged that the Chief of Staff to Magu, Mr Olukayode, was a staff of Femi Falana’s Law firm, until Mr Falana seconded him to work for the EFCC boss.
In exchange, the EFCC Boss, allegedly gave a building recovered from Alameysia to Falana, which is why Femi Falana is fighting tooth and nail, to make sure the EFCC does not account for the recovered funds and property by EFCC. It should be noted also, that the property which was given by the EFCC Boss to Falana, is still a pending matter before the Court of Appeal.
The story of how Falana became close to the three musketeers (Nuhu Ribadu, Ibrahim Lamorde, and Ibrahim Magu), dates back to the inception of the establishment of the EFCC, in 2003.
Lately, there have been so many allegations regarding assets recovery that were unaccounted or even diverted. This led to one Security Expert, George Uboh, to give some exposé, on how past leadership of the EFCC, must have converted recoveries and assets for their self-aggrandizement.
Femi Falana, is allegedly the greatest beneficiary of this impunity, under the three musketeers at the EFCC. The senior Lawyer had his own share from most of the allegations on diversion of assets, and properties recovered under the leadership of these pioneer officers of the EFCC.
According to sources, one of the benefits allegedly derived by Falana from Mallam Ribadu, is the Marble House located at IBB Way, Maitama, Abuja.
This was an asset that was seized by the then leadership of Mallam Ribadu, from Oil Magnate, “AA Oil”, in the early days of the EFCC.
“Similarly, during the time of Ibrahim Lamorde, we observed that despite the widely known corruption and impunity, under the leadership of Lamorde at the EFCC, Mr Falana, SAN, kept mute”, a source said.
Unfortunately, the same trend is repeating itself under the man who sees himself as the only Saint in our clime today, Ibrahim Magu. To keep the business as usual, and protect image laundering, the anti-graft agency’s boss, has now also continued with the format laid by their Pioneer musketeer, but increased his pecuniary bribes and gratification to the senior Lawyer.
“This, with the hope that as most Nigerians speak against his (Magu’s) confirmation, as the EFCC Chairman, Mr Falana, SAN, will help misinform, misinterpret, and mislead the naive Nigerians, insisting that Mr Magu can continue to act or be re-nominated”, the source concluded.
