Four mobile policemen have been arrested and detained by the Delta State Police Command for allegedly killing a traditional chief, Lucky Ayomanor, in Sapele, headquarters of Sapele Local Government Area of the state. The suspected policemen attached to Sapele Divisional Headquarters include two Hausas, a Yoruba and an Idoma from Benue State.
The chief was allegedly killed after a heated argument that ensued at a ‘stop and search’ operation at Oruakpa, near Ghana Quarters. The mobile policemen killed him for carrying a licensable pumpaction gun to his farm. The victim, a 52-year-old man, who contested the Okpe Constituency seat at the state’s House of Assembly in 2015, was installed a High Chief by the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom.
However, the crisis that led to his death was swiftly controlled by the combined effort of the Divisional Police Officers (DPO) in Sapele and Okpe lands, while the people of the Kingdom have threatened to cause mayhem, for yet another extra-judicial killing by policemen in the soil.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, yesterday in Asaba, the state capital, said the suspects have been arrested and detained. “They will remain in custody until the circumstances leading to the death of the victim is determined,” Aniamaka said. According to him, the titled chief was said to have developed cold feat and was shivering after the rifle was discovered in his car but what eventually led to his death has not been ascertained.
While a source said the suspects hit the High Chief with the boot of their rifles during the friction, one of the victim’s kinsmen, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the High Chief was not shot by the suspects, but was bundled into the boot of his car for minutes, where he suffocated.
“The command should torture the suspects, the same way they do to ordinary men on the streets, if the truth of the matter must come out. Our brother was thrown into the boot of his car and cause to die for lack of air or inability to breath,” the family source said.
