President Muhamamdu Buhari, through the National Security Adviser, Babagana Munguno, has banned the planned helicopter shuttle service from Kaduna to Abuja, by some helicopter companies.
Recall, that some foreigners and highly placed Nigerians had resolved to be shuttling with helicopters to the Kaduna Airport, since the closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Traffic has increased on the Kaduna-Abuja highway, after the government shut down the Abuja Airport, and diverted all relevant flights to the Kaduna Airport.
In a memo banning the move, Munguno said: “In view of the closure of the Airport, air travelers will be required to travel by road/train to Abuja from the Kaduna International Airport. This will undoubtedly cause constraints on the movement of some passengers, who will aim to travel using other means, notably the use of commercial ferry helicopters.
“Please be reminded that the airspace over the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is controlled, and only security flights or those with the requisite security clearance from the Presidency, are granted overhead clearance for obvious security reasons. Consequently, you are to note and ensure that no charter or commercial helicopter ferry flights are allowed to fly within the Abuja airspace.”
Meanwhile, the shocking directive has brought panic and apprehension in the minds of travelers, who see the Abuja/Kaduna express way, as a danger zone.
Recall, that last Friday, a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Kashim Shettima, died in an accident along the Abuja-Kaduna highway, on his way to the Airport.
The victim, identified as Farouk Musa, died after a car intercepted a Hilux in which he was driving in the convoy of Shettima.
Also, a few days ago, two people were kidnapped, and another shot, when armed robbers attacked their vehicle along the Abuja/Kaduna highway.
The shot victim, Lawal Adamu, narrated the incident from his hospital bed, at the National Hospital, Abuja.
Post-Nigeria, gathered that the two major roads linking Abuja to Kaduna, the Abuja-Kaduna highway, and the Bwari-Jere road, are notorious for armed robbery attacks and other criminal activities.
The Federal Government has however, claimed to have deployed large number of security officials to the Abuja-Kaduna highway, since the diversion of flights from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, in Abuja, to the Kaduna International Airport, Kaduna.
