No fewer than 18 aspirants are now on the line to succeed President Muhamamdu Buhari’s political son, the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, in the 2019 Governorship election, Post-Nigeria has learnt.
The Gubernatorial hopefuls, who have initiated subtle moves towards realising their ambition, cut across various political divides in the State.
Prominent among them are a Lagos lawmaker, Senator Solomon Adeola; former House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole; Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi; two-time Governorship candidate, Gboyega Isiaka; former House of Representatives Member, Abiodun Akinlade; and Amosun’s Chief of Staff, Tolu Odebiyi.
Also in strong contention are: a former Lawmaker, Senator Lekan Mustapha; former Governorship candidate of Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Otunba Rotimi Paseda; Lawmaker representing Remo Federal Constituency, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu; former Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Olorunnibe Mamora; and a former State Deputy Speaker, Remmy Hassan.
Another Politician on the card, is the Senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly, Buruji Kashamu, whose surprise interest in the Governorship run, may further ruffle feathers within the opposition.
Three persons currently serving in Amosun’s cabinet, are also said to be interested in the top job. They are Ayo Olubori (Senior Consultant), Kola Lawal (Commissioner for Forestry), and Otunba Bimbo Ashiru (Commissioner for Commerce and Industry).
Others being touted are one-time aspirant, Prince Dapo Abiodun; Property Magnate, Chief Olajide Awosedo; and incumbent Chairman of Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, Mr Rotimi Rahman.
Close Aides of the aspirants, revealed at the weekend that their principals would not turn down any opportunity to take a shot at the Governorship ticket, in 2019.
