Senate President Bukola Saraki has welcomed the recommendations of Vanguard Against Tiv Massacre (VATIM) towards finding a lasting solution to attacks on Benue communities by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Saraki said the Senate would adopt some of the recommendations, which he described as “useful and constructive,” in taking legislative action to stem the killings.
It would be recalled that VATIM in a recent peaceful protest to the National Assembly over killings in the state, which according to the body, had assumed the dimension of a genocide, had among others, demanded urgent enactment and implementation of appropriate legislation and called on the National Assembly to enact legislation to address the crisis.
“We ask the National Assembly to visit the affected areas and to set up a panel of inquiry into these incessant attacks by herdsmen and adopt appropriate legislation to stem this ugly tide,” VATIM had said in its letter dated March 16, 2017.
Responding to the demands, the Senate President in a letter dated March 20, 2017, and signed by his Chief of Staff, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said: “your letter has provided useful information and constructive inputs on how to resolve the problems of killing and attempted genocide in the affected communities.”
He assured that the 8th Senate would work to bring back peace and harmony in the affected communities.
