Worried by the trend of events and the killings across the country, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has declared that Nigeria as a country may soon cease to exist and its people consumed by the ongoing Southern Kaduna crisis, if not properly handled, Nigerian Tribune has reported.
He made stunning disclosure while speaking with the leadership of Jamaatul Nasrul Islam, the Christian Association of Nigeria, traditional rulers and community leaders at the Government House, Kaduna State, on Friday.
Yemi Osinbajo said he wanted to be part of an enduring peace process in the troubled area and also expressed concern that generations yet unborn would suffer grievous calamities if the crisis was not resolved.
The acting president also said the endemic sufferings, bloodletting and endless loss of lives in the area for the past three decades must end.
“I am here this afternoon (Friday) to inspect the Kaduna Airport, but I told the governor that I want to meet with the people of Southern Kaduna before I return to Abuja. I want to express my sympathy to the families and friends of the victims of their loved one.
“Violence, hate, in whatever name, can never be resolved in this manner of endless vengeance and reprisal attacks. I have studied and looked at the documents of the past crises, received briefs from the service chiefs when I met with them recently. I equally received briefs from the chairmen of Jema’a and Kaura local government councils.
“But let me quickly say here, I don’t want us to be in a hurry and try to fix things fast. I want the crisis to end and it would only be achieved if we begin the process. I want to be part of that process.
“I want to devote my time. Yes, I will have time to come and meet with the major stakeholders individually, because there could be others who might have something to say that are not here.
“So, after meeting with them individually I will then meet with all concerned and see how this issue would be resolved. It is not something that can be resolved in days. We will take the time to do so.
“You see, I am a Christian and a pastor. From the training I had, killing has to do with something spiritual. And no loss of life goes like that without haunting the people. And the killings in this area have taken a long time.
“It would consume us and even the future generations if we do not resolve the crisis. Or are we going to wait when more lives are lost before we end the crisis?” the acting president asked.
Speaking earlier, the state governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, said the failure to bring the culprits to face the law has been responsible for the escalation of the crisis.
According to him, no single individual had been punished since the past 37 years when the crisis erupted in the state, declaring however that “this government is a government of law and order.
“All those who have participated in the killings and destruction of property for the past 37 years no matter their status would be brought to justice”.
The governor commended the security agencies for their efforts in ensuring that peace reigned in the area, pointing out that, “we will continue to support them in our resolve to ensure that peace returns to the area”.
