A former aide to ex-Governor Peter Odili, Chief Glory Emeh, said he decided to leave the All Progressives Congress because of the division in the opposition party in Rivers State.
Emeh said in an interview with The PUNCH that he eventually went back to the Peoples Democratic Party because the APC in the state lacked leadership and direction.
He specifically said that the opposition party in the state was now made up of members who were loyal to former Governor Rotimi Amaechi and others who were loyal to Senator Magnus Abe and former governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside.
Emeh, who was a commissioner in Odili’s administration, also added that things became worse after the immediate past governor proclaimed who would be the governorship candidate for the Rivers APC in the 2019 general election.
“Last week Thursday, the party (APC) had their meeting at The Dome in Port Harcourt. In that meeting, Amaechi was said to have expressed anger that Dakuku Peterside and Magnus Abe had polarised the party to the extent that there were three distinct camps.
“One belonging to him (Amaechi), one belonging to Dakuku and the other to Magnus Abe; and that he announced that he had decided to give the governorship ticket to Tonye Cole.
Reacting, the state Deputy Chairman of the APC, Chief Peter Odike, disagreed with Emeh, saying that Amaechi never said or implied that the party in the state had divided into three camps.
Odike, who spoke through the telephone with our correspondent, described Emeh’s statement as the language of a man going to the other side of the divide, maintaining that the APC in Rivers State remained a united party.
“There was no time our leader, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, made a statement that our party is divided into three camps. Glory Emeh’s claim is a language of a man going to the other side of the divide.”
