The presidency has on Thursday, January 5, explained the safety precaution in the presidential villa that led to the accidental discharge in the State House on Wednesday.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement, reassured all Nigerians and foreigners of the safety of the seat of power in the country.
Shehu said, according to reports received so far, if not for the routine check of security operatives in the Presidential Villa, No one knew what could have happen to the seat of power (Buhari).
He said, “The security official involved is not attached to the State House. Rather, he came on invitation as a witness in an on-going investigation and was required, as is the rule, to surrender his weapon at the gates before entry.‘’It was in the process of conducting the normal safety precaution as professionally required that the pistol accidentally fired.‘’Unfortunately, the security operative and the lady by his side, a caterer in the State House, were hit by a pellet of the bullet. Both of them were attended to at the clinic and discharged,’’ the Presidential spokesman said.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday evening, escaped death from an accidental discharge of one of the security agents attached to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
During the incident, a female worker in the Presidential villa sustained multiple injuries on her abdomen, back and thigh as a result of the gun shot.
She was subsequently rushed to the State House Medical Centre in Asokoro for medical treatment.
According to Punch, the operative was said to be trying to empty the weapon before submitting it at the security point when the bullet went off.
The operative and the female worker, who was also making her way into the premises at the time, were injured in the process.
Recal,l that on February 23, 2016, a similar incident happened in the Presidential Villa where a security operative, attached to the delegation of the Danish Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Kristian Jensen, who visited Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, was said to have attempted to pass through the last security checkpoint with his weapon.
Based on the rules, security men, attached to the same Administrative Reception, where the last screening always takes place, were said to have told him that he could not go beyond the point with his weapon. In the process of submitting the weapon to operatives, the gun went off.
