The functions of the Department of States Security Services, DSS, under the executive control of President Muhammadu Buhari, would soon be redefined, as the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, including several Lawmakers, have vowed to amend the act creating the DSS.
The Speaker made the observation on Wednesday, November 23, while inaugurating a House Committee, charged with the responsibility of investigating the alleged barbaric DSS clampdown on Judges.
Dogora while expressing displeasure against President Buhari, for allowing the DSS to clampdown on senior Judicial Officers, began to question the functions of the DSS, as it has left its primary role of intelligence gathering.
He said, ”It is untidy, it seems to have multiple agencies exercising similar functions.“The EFCC already handles issues of corruption, and economic crimes in Nigeria; should the State Security Service also be charged with the same functions,” Dogara asked.
Recall, that the men of the DSS, in a coordinated operation, attacked the homes of Judges across the country on October 7 and 8.
President Buhari, had while reacting to the raid, defended the DSS, for their action, as he said he was fighting corrupt Judges, and not necessarily the Judiciary.
Despite the President’s explanation, the crackdown has created diverse controversies, with Nigerians taking different sides.
While some Nigerians supported the move, others have raised concerns, over plans by the President, to intimidate senior Judicial Officers, all in a bid to force Judges to do his bidding.

Meanwhile, at the height of the crisis, the Speaker, who refused to comment on Wednesday, condemned the attack in a motion moved by a Lawmaker Representing Rivers State, Kingsley Ogundu.
He said, ”The activities of the State Security Service of late, have raised concerns in the Nigerian polity, as to the propriety of the conduct of officials of the Service, and whether their actions are consistent with the law setting it up.“It is in this regard, that I enjoin this Committee to make relevant findings of fact that will enable the National Assembly initiate the necessary amendments to the National Security Agencies Act, and even the Constitution where necessary, to ensure conformity with the constitutional design and framework that envisage that Federal Legislative power should be domiciled in the National Assembly, and not shared with the Executive, in the manner provided under the Act,” Dogara said.
