As the ongoing counter-insurgency war intensifies, at least 85 Boko Haram hostages, mostly women and children, have been rescued, in Chukungudu, on the fringe of Lake Chad, by troops of 7 Division Nigerian Army, Operation ‘Lafiya Dole’, led by the General Officer Commanding of the Division, Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu.
Chukungudu, on the Southern fringes of Lake Chad Region in the Northern part of Borno State, is a strategic hub town, from where Boko Haram conducts its premeditated operations.
However, the maneuvering Brigade, led by 3 Battalion of 22 Brigade, successfully cleared Geram, Bulankassa, and Chukungudu.
The troops neutralized five Boko Haram terrorist fighters in a fierce encounter, that made several of the terrorists running into the Lake Chad waters.
The troops recovered 4 rounds of Rocket Propelled Grenade, RPG, bombs, 1 Double Barrel Gun, 349 packets, containing various rounds of ammunition, 3 Magazines, a link belt of machine gun ammunition, and 1 AK-47 rifle magazine.
During the clearance operations, the troops made spectacular discovery of an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, making factory, at Geram. In the factory, they found several already primed suicide bombers vests. They also discovered well-equipped motor vehicles, and motorcycles workshop, and spare parts warehouse, at Chukungudu village.
The troops recovered 3 vehicles, and several newly acquired motorcycles. However, a soldier died during the encounter.
Meanwhile, members of the Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG, advocacy, have confirmed that the recently rescued Chibok girl, Maryam Ali, was abducted alongside her twin sister.
The group which praised the military for its gallantry, confirmed that Maryam Ali, who comes from Askira Uba, is number 198 on their list, and her sister Halima Ali, who is yet to be rescued, is number 197.
The group in a press statement by its Spokesperson, Sesugh Akume, also sympathized with the Nigerian Army, on the death of the Commanding Officer of the 272 Task Force Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Muhammed Abu Ali, and four other officers.
The statement read, “We welcome news of the return of another of our abducted #ChibokGirls. Reports from the Acting Director of the Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman Kukasheka, state that Maryam Ali Maiyanga, was found among a group of fellow escapees, by troops of 121 Battalion, Nigerian Army, deployed at Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State.“Preliminary investigations on our part, show that Maryam Ali (Number 198 on our list), a school prefect, is from Askira Uba, and was abducted along with her twin, Halima Ali (Number 197), who is yet to return. We shall update the public with more details as necessary.“We applaud the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari, the military, and other security formations, working day and night to rout the terrorists, and rescue all Nigerians in captivity.“The news of the death of the Commanding Officer of the 272 Task Force Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Muhammed Abu Ali, a highly-rated young officer, and 4 other members of his team, in a separate incident at Mallam Fatori, is unfortunate and saddening. We send our heartfelt condolences, especially to their families, and the Nigerian military.”
