The immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, on Wednesday, December 21, said it is fool hardy for President Muhammadu Buhari, or anybody, to think that recession would end any time soon.
Obi, stated this at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, while inaugurating a building donated to the Radio Station of the Department of Mass Communication, NAU, by the institution’s Dean of Social Sciences, Prof. Chinyere Okunna.
Recall, that President Buhari had appealed to Nigerians, not to lose faith in the ability of his administration to make a difference in their lives, saying the 2017 Budget contains measures that would pull Nigeria out the current economic recession.
The President, had in his 2016 Eid-El-Maulud message to Muslim faithfuls, urged Nigerians not to despair, as he was doing his best to redress the situation, particularly with a number of policies he had embedded in the 2017 budget proposals.
Reacting, Obi said: “I laugh when I hear people say the recession will soon end. This is not true. A critical analysis of the 2017 budget, will show you that the recession will not end soon.”
The former Governor, said it was foolhardy for anybody to think that the recession would end soon.
“But there is hope. The hope is for us to change our spending system. Government should cut down the cost of running government.“If you see any government spending extravagantly, you shout and nothing will happen to you, because it is your money that is being spent. That is one of the ways to tackle this recession,” Obi stated.
Earlier, the Senate had described the Medium Term Expenditure Framework/Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP) document, the template for the 2017 Budget, as deficient.
It said, the document forwarded to both arms of the National Assembly by Buhari, lacked the necessary ingredients to address the nation’s present economic woes.
