Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign States of Biafra, MASSOB, Tuesday urged Ndigbo to hold South East governors
responsible for any Fulani herdsmen attacks in their territory. MASSOB in a statement jointly signed by Imo State Coordinator, Mazi Lotachukwu Ikeogu, and Secretary, Sabastine Muonso, during its 17th anniversary at its headquarters, Okwe in Onuimo Local Government Area also warned Ndigbo to be at alert at all times.
The movement called for formation of community- based watchdog in various localities to protect Ndigbo from external aggression, which it said the South East governors have failed to do.
MASSOB said until this was done, Fulani herdsmen would continue to invade Igbo farmland. “Until Ndigbo understand the potency, efficiency, efficacy, ability, capabilities, consistency and undying spirit of Igbo oriented based self determination groups in natively protecting and defending Igbo people, interest and future, Hausa Fulani herdsmen will continue to harass, intimidate, invade and cause more pogroms against Biafra,” it said.
While joining other members in the celebration of its formation, MASSOB, however, noted that the efforts of falling heroes of the group both in the Biafran war and those that sacrificed their lives for the course shall never be forgotten.
“MASSOB join millions of other members worldwide in celebrating our long walk to freedom. “Today, we remember the brutalities of our non violence MASSOB members, the mesmerization, detention, imprisonment and killings of our non violence MASSOB members.
“Today, we also remember the traumatic torture, massacre of unarmed MASSOB members at Umulolo Okigwe on 29th March, 2003. “Today, we remember the uncelebrated deaths of our gallant fallen heroes; we also remember the traumatic deaths of the parents of our members who died because of shock.
“MASSOB can never forget the death of first two Biafra martyrs, Gabriel Ogu from Mbaise and Joseph Okereke from Ngor Okpala both in Imo State. They willingly gave their lives in defense of Biafra flag at Faulks Road, Aba on 22 May, 2000 when MASSOB hoisted the Biafra flag,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, 14 suspected members of the movement have been arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State by the police over alleged illegal procession. Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, Mrs. Nkeiruka Nwode, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha yesterday.
Nwode said that the arrests were carried out in different parts of the town during a procession by the group to mark 17 years of its existence. She explained that the persons were arrested for illegal procession, adding that no life was lost in the confusion that followed the arrest of the members.
However, Religious Administrator of MASSOB, Rev. Apostle Ezichukwu, claimed that more than 50 members were arrested, with 20 missing and one person allegedly shot by the police. Ezichukwu, who said the procession was peaceful, wondered why the police arrested members of the group.
He alleged that security personnel from the Army, Police, Navy and NSCDC were detaining MASSOB members at the Army Barracks, Onitsha, police headquarters, Awka and other police stations. Also speaking, Anambra North Zonal Leader of MASSOB, Mr. Benjamin Omenka, appealed for the release of those arrested and urged members of the group to be patient.
According to him, the present call for restructuring by some segments of the country came as a result of the fear for Biafra independence by those who have tied the country down. “Let the whole world know that we are resolute in our stand for a Biafra Republic. “It is not compulsory that we shall remain one indivisible nation, so they should allow us to go to our Promised Land,” he said, adding that the agitation would remain a peaceful one.
