Anambra State governor, chief Willie Obiano who is seeking re-election to get back to the government house in Awka after the November 18, governorship election is arguably not an orator.
Anybody who watched him during the campaign flag off for his re-election at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme square in Awka, the Anambra state capital a fortnight ago would agree that his soap box performance was nothing to write home about.
His Speech which was bereft of what he had done in the last three years and seven mouths that he superintended over the affairs of the state other than claiming to have improved the state’s security apparatus, built three flyovers in Awka to beautify the city and the agriculture sector with his no food on the masses table, and usual jibes at his predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) simply received a tepid applause.
The speech rendered extempore lacked the bite and oratorial vibrancy to move the crowd of rented supporters from the state’s 21 local government areas that tronged the Ekwueme arena.
But now, the Governor appears to be getting it right by recruiting tested politicians like the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, former Health Minister under Obasanjo administration, Dr. Tim Menakaya, former Governor of Anambra state, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Pioneer chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra state, Chief Joseph Offia Diulu Okonkwo, and a four time member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ben Nwankwo who has defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) from the PDP to do much of the soap box talking for him before he mounts the rostrum to tell the people that they had heard it all from the “ Generals” of Anambra politics.
The recruitment of these political gladiators Independent learnt was not without some form of agreements entered into between the parties.
Hon. Ben Nwamkwo gave an indictation to this allusion when Obiano’s campaign train arrived at Orumba North and South local government areas penultimate week and during which he defected to the APGA with about 2,000 supporters from the federal constituency in the state’s southern zone said that it had been agreed that after Obiano’s second term in office the ticket would will go to the southern zone with the support of the Governor’s northern zone, adding that it was better than supporting those who want to begin a fresh four year term with a promise that they will do a single term that may not be honoured.

He described the PDP on which platform he went to the National Assembly thrice as “Persecution Development Party” (PDP) and asked rhetorically, ‘what do I do with such a party?; even as he offered the answer as nothing emphatically”.
Obiano he said had given access to the riverine communities in the federal constituency, built some roads in the area, and empowered the poor.
“We can’t abandon you. You are a working Willy and the effect is that you are winning and rightly deserved another four years because you are developing a development corridor” he said, adding, “I am already in your midst , give me the right seat and you will see what I will do”.
To Soludo, APGA he said would rule Anambra state for 50 years during which the state would have become one of the biggest economies in Africa.
Only Obiano he said will ensure that power is transferred to Anambra south in the next four years and any other person promising that is lying out of desperation, adding that Obiano had already laid the foundation for massive industrial development of the state.
The Director- General of Chief Willy Obiano re-election campaign organization and former National chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh assured the people that with Obiano’s second term in office, they were in safe hands.
He asked the voters in the area to ensure that they obtained their Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC) and troop out to vote for APGA on November 18, as well as protect their votes from the polling units to the collation centre as a vote for Obiano will ensure job creation for the youth through agriculture, more roads tarred and more business created.
Obiano told the people that he would expand his administration’s welfare package for the youth, and that with the passage of the state health insurance scheme by the State House of Assembly, all the elderly people in the state from the age of 75 years and above will receive free medical care and a N5000 monthly stipend for their up-keep.
