MINORITY Itsekiri ethnic nationality has called on the Federal Government to hold a nationwide referendum on devolution of powers and true federalism that will guarantee equity and social justice among all component groups.
The Itsekiri ethnic nationality under th aegis of the Itsekiri National Forum, INF, yesterday in Warri, Delta state, said that Itsekiri supports a Nigeria that remains indivisible and abhors any violent split or exclusion of any state or group from the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Itsekiri position presented by Chief Komi Kartey, leader of INF and Secretary, Olu-In-Council, described Itsekiri as major contributor to the nation’s economy and not below second position among oil and gas producing ethnic groups, but that the present sociology-political arrangements have not rewarded them accordingly.
They demanded that the envisaged restructured government to, “remain democratic with all arms and institutions managed in cost effective manner with zero tolerance for corruption, nepotism, and undue imbalance in the devolution of powers.
They further stated; “Itsekiri wholeheartedly call for a national conference with equal participation of each ethnic group within a legal framework guaranteeing in the examination and determination among other critical issues for national development.
“Such national conference should reckon with the 2014 National Conference. In the end, the conclusions should be put to a referendum of the people of Nigeria for the outcome to be truly felt by ‘We the people of Nigeria”
“Guarantee monitory protection and development to ensure that immense diversity of ethnic nationalities comprised in the state continue to co-exist in peace, prosperity and progress as citizens of one country united in common interest and destiny.
It added that revenue sharing must conform with fiscal federalism with states retaining some measure of independence and autonomy, pledging to work with relevant stakeholders who sell same aspirations in negotiating the “Nigeria envisaged by founding fathers”
