Elder Statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, has revealed why late Nigeria's Head of State, Gen Aguyi Ironsi was actually overthrown as the call for a restructuring of Nigeria continues.
He stated this while speaking to Vanguard in an interview in Abuja, Nigeria.
He said prior to Aguiyi Ironsi assumption of office as Head of State, Nigeria was administered in regions in line with true federalism which the north wanted and supported at the time but Aguyi Ironsi's coming changed all that when he foisted a unitary form of government on the country.
This, he said angered the northerners who insisted on regional governments. This above all led to the bloody coup that sacked the military government of General Ironsi.
He said: “Again, each region had its own constitution and was developing at its own pace. For instance, Western Nigeria became self-governing in 1959 when the North was not ready.''
“When the military took over, it was said that Ironsi returned the country to a unitary form of government like what existed during Richards Constitution and the northerners said no, the regions must stay, power must remain with the regions, and that is why they said they staged the coup, but nothing changed, all that is restructuring.''
