The Federal Government has said there is no going back on the proscription of the Biafra separatist group the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB which has been classified as a terrorist organization.
The was made known by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. He said the decision to proscribe the group as reached considering its activities which posed a serious threat to Nigeria's national security.
He stated this while speaking on a BBC World Service programme, Focus on Africa.
He said the IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu openly solicited for arms, ordered its members to attack army formations. On top of that, the IPOB leader also set up parallel security organizations namely the Biafra National Guard and Biafra Security Service.
He said: “This is also the same man who openly solicited for arms, the same man who set up his own Biafran National Guard, his own Biafra Secret Service, and the same man who actually attacked army formations.”
Asked by the anchor why other armed groups in Nigeria were not declared terrorist organizations, yet IPOB that did not “raise so much as a single cutlass against the Nigerian state” was so categorized, Mohammed said acts of criminality were different from acts of terrorism.

“I think acts of criminality should not be confused with terrorist acts. When an organization decides to not just attack the army but sets up its own parallel government, openly solicits for arms all over the world, issuing its own passports and its own currency, does not recognize your government, then it becomes a different thing,” he said.
