The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has claimed that there are plans by the federal government to employ jihad as a means to Islamize the country.
According to Vanguard report, the group made its comments in a statement signed by its chairman, Solomon Asemota, SAN, titled ‘Jihad in Nigeria: Burying the Head in Sand’.
The statement was released by the group in a bid to defend its earlier stance outlined in a statement in July, which was rebuffed by Muslim leaders who insisted that there were no such plans to Islamize Nigeria.
It read in part: “The objective of the Islamists (political Islam) is to supplant the constitution of Nigeria with Sharia ideology as the source of legislation in the nation.
‘’The conflict between democracy as national ideology and Sharia as a usurping ideology is responsible for the crisis unfolding in Nigeria.
“The nation is in the throes of Jihad.’’
The group also claimed that ‘truth’ is being criminalized as ‘hate speech’, and warned that the nation is drawing close to a dangerous ‘red line’.
Challenging Muslim leaders over their denials of plans to Islamize Nigeria, the NCEF outlined quotes by the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, in one of his recent videos, in which he stated that it was a religious war, and not a political war, that he and his members were fighting.
Shekau had reportedly stated: “It is between Muslims and unbelievers (arna). “It will stop when Islamic religion is the determinant in governance in Nigeria or, in the alternative, when all fighters are annihilated and no one is left to continue the fight.”
The group thus stated: “If this statement is not a declaration of Jihad, could Muslim leaders explain what this means?’’ In response however, the Presidency denied the NCEF’s claims.
According to President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, “The times in which we are do not call for unnecessary suspicion.
“The only agenda President Muhammadu Buhari has is emergence of a new Nigeria, safe, prosperous, corrupt free, where our children can have a future and a hope.”
Recall that it was previously reported that the Nigerian Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) accused Northerners of plotting to turn Nigerian into a caliphate.
The group disclosed that some of the policies of the Buhari government, were “directly or indirectly promoting the “theocratic agenda the North has for Nigeria.”
