Colonel Tony Nyiam (rtd), one of the surviving ring leaders of the April 22, 1990 abortive coup against General Ibrahim Babangida regime has spoken on military coup considering the ongoing instability in Nigeria.
He bared his mind in an interview with the New Telegraph on the state of the nation.
Asked to speak on the possible military takeover resulting from the current developments in the country, he said it is not wise adding that the military took over before which did not in any way help Nigeria.
He opined that the mistake of the past should, therefore never be repeated.
He said: ''It is not wise. The military took over before; did it help us? Nobody should be fooled. I always used two examples to make a point; Pakistan and India. Pakistan has had many coups and till today Pakistan is not stable. India has never had a coup; they have always had democracy and with all the corruption and weaknesses, the country is stable. In Pakistan, it is all about coup and this is a system that we have to reject when General Ibrahim Babangida want to disrupt.
In Pakistan, military and intelligence control power and once a leader is no more up to their tune, they dethroned him as it happened to the present Prime Minister. They made him and when he was growing wings, they kicked against him. So, Pakistan which has many great minds and man power is not as developed as India and it is not as stable as India because they follow the route of coups. So, military coups are no way; let the politicians made their mistakes. Let us allow our democracy to progress.''
