Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the Senate, to wait until such a time when the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, becomes Acting President, for the Lawmakers to remove the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.
Falana, stated this in a statement on Thursday, while again insisting that Magu’s appointment did not require the Senate’s approval.
“In view of the foregoing, the implementation of the resolution of the Senate on the removal of Mr. Ibrahim Magu, as the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, should be ignored by the Presidency, on account of its apparent illegality.
“However, the distinguished Senators who are desperate to institutionalise official corruption and impunity in the country, by removing Mr. Magu from office, may have to wait for the planned installation of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, as the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria!” the statement read in part.
Falana’s statement is coming at a time when the face-off between Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, and the Senate, over Magu’s appointment, is heightened.
Osinbajo, who was represented by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, had earlier on Thursday, at the opening of the EFCC office in Kaduna, maintained that Magu will remain EFCC Chairman, so long as the present administration subsists.
Meanwhile, the Senate had on Tuesday, threatened that it was never going to approve any appointment sent to it from the Presidency, except Magu, who the Lawmakers had on two occasions rejected, is sacked as the EFCC boss.
It also demanded that Osinbajo withdraws a statement he made in April, where he aligned himself with an earlier position of Falana, that the Presidency did not need the approval of the Senate to sanction Magu’s appointment, as the anti-graft agency czar.
