Contrary to earlier claims by the Buhari administration that Boko Haram insurgency has been defeated, the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima yesterday urged troops of Nigerian Army to intensify efforts end Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the northeast.
He made the appeal yesterday while addressing members of the State Executive Council and other top government officials in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
His words: “Although our troops have recorded tremendous successes against the Boko Haram insurgents, but the recent incessant attacks and bombings in various parts of this state, is very much worrisome to us all.
“We have also commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Army for their efforts in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism.”He said in the last two weeks, the troops had tremendous security challenges in Chibok, Damboa, Maiduguri metropolis, including the nooks and crannies of the state.
This he explained: “We were literary attacked by the insurgents from different angles. Yes, we had recorded lots of successes before.”He urged the Army to strive hard in containing the recent incessant attacks of insurgents.
Shettima however noted: “We witnessed lots of setbacks in a short while. All hands must be on deck for us to have a lasting peace not only in Borno but the entire Northeast sub-region.”
He said: “It is not for us to take two steps forward and one step backwards. It is not for us to wake up to be reluctant to open our phones for fear of getting uncomplimentary stories about attacks in the state.
He said government would continue to reach out to security establishments toward ending this madness of insurgents that destroyed many lives and property in Borno and other affected states in the North-East.“We would continue talking with the security establishments toward coming up with robust platform to address the security challenge that had refused to go,” he said.
