Information reaching our news desk says Gambia's Information Minister Demba Jawo is on a collision course with President Adama Barrow over the donation of two vehicles by the President to the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS).
President Barrow is seen toeing the line of exiled Jammeh in this regard by acting as a philantropist to the government , a practice by Jammeh which he has consistently denounced.
He took delivery of the vehicles in question on Friday last week from Director General of The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA’S) Yankuba Darboe, on Friday, on behalf of GRTS.
However, while expressing his discontent, he has vowed to confront the President on the issue on return from Saudi Arabia.
He said: “I received a phone call from Ebrima Sillah, the Director General of GRTS, on Friday, who informed me that they were supposed to receive vehicles from the GRA and that I should show up to receive the keys from DG Yankuba Darboe. Upon arrival, I was told by the GRA DG that the vehicles were from President Barrow.''
Continuing, Demba Jawo said the source of the vehicles remains cloudy to him which he intends to verify when the President returns from Saudi Arabia.
His words: ''I have no idea where the vehicles were coming from. I have no means of confirming it. The President is out of the country. I am waiting for him to come from Saudi to confirm the issue with him. I will definitely take up the issue with the president because I received the vehicles.”
His contention is that donation to the government ought not to come from the President as he would be seen running the country like his personal estate and this was shared by many Gambians who suspect a gradual descent to Jammeh's days.
“If there should be any donation to the government, it should be done through the government and not through the president. I want to clarify the issue with Barrow. I was personally involved in the handing over the vehicles.”
