World Food Programme has been assisting the Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria's embattled northeast for quite sometime since the reign of terror by the Islamist sect began via distribution of food and medical supplies.
Speaking to our source, Maigari Bala, said the insurgents intercepted the the trucks conveying food and medical supplies at Damboa and carted away with the contents meant for the IDPs.
“They laid siege on the road around 3pm this afternoon. They seized a truck loaded with rice which was meant for distribution at an internally displaced person (IDPs), camp in Damboa,” he said.
“We took to our heels when we saw them in a very large number. They were shooting everywhere and chanting ‘Allahu Akhbar’.”
The insurgents, Bala said, only carted away with the food supplies without hurting or killing anyone.
Another driver who spoke to our reporter in Maiduguri, the Borno Sate capital on condition of anonymity said recounted how he narrowly escaped the insurgents.
He said, “On a normal day, they would have killed everyone in sight, but this time around, they came for food,” he said.
“I thank God that I didn’t run into him.”
