Chances are that President Trump of the United States of America may summon President Buhari of Nigeria for urgent talks on Biafra referendum as the Voice of America reports that Biafran secessionist movement grows stronger in Nigeria.
According to the Voice of America (VOA) on ''On May 30, many people in southeastern Nigeria will remember those who lost their lives in one of Africa’s most brutal wars. More than 1 million people died during Nigeria’s 1967 to 1970 civil war known as the Biafra War The conflict erupted after leaders from southeastern Nigeria declared that the region would secede from Nigeria. Memories of the war remain strong for those who lived through it.''
Most people in the epicenter of Biafra agitation, in the five Igbo-speaking southeast states recount strong and bitter memories of the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War that killed no fewer than one million Igbo people at the period under sad review.
VOA spoke to a good number of Igbo people in the region who bared their minds on the horror of the fatricidal civil war.
One of such person is Enuma Okoro who recounted the brutality unleashed on the civil populace during the 30-month civil war by the Gowonist army.
He said, “Have you been walking with somebody and the bomb killed him and all you have to do is look at the corpse and continue walking? Even if it’s your sister, you just continue walking because you’re running for dear life? Or have you been hidden in the roof of a building because you are afraid, because your mother is afraid the soldiers will come and rape you?”
In a similar vein, Obum Okeke who was only seven years old also recounted the misery caused by the war to the people of the region.
“In my compound we saw several skeletons of dead people. My father’s compound was flattened. It was a war front,” says Obum Okeke.
However, Voice of America further reports that the war gained a global attention as it made news headlines around the world with photographs of starving children who were reduced to bag of bones at the period under review.
The reports by VOA while speaking to the one of the traditional rulers, Christopher Ejiorfor says “First of all, the first thing you notice is the stomach bloated,"
Also quoted in the report is a military officer and leader of the short-lived Republic of Biafra.
He said, "The arms to the bones, the legs to the bones, the thigh to the bones, the head, skull. Can you imagine that? That is a starving a child. And that is what happened everywhere in Biafra.”
Be that as it may, Voice of America (VOA) reports that a survey conducted and released last week by a Nigerian research group revealed that the pro-Biafra movement is gaining support, particularly among young people who did not experience the war. The rise could also be a reaction for a region that has received little infrastructural development from the federal government.
A senior University student Sofuru Afah was quoted as saying that “I am supporting it [Biafra] because that is who I am; Nigeria is an artificial creation by the British. I am not a Nigerian and I have never been and I never will. Buhari hates our people.”
The report further went to name the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu whose movement IPOB has become the most popular of al the movements.
It reported that Kanu was detained for nearly two years in the Nigerian capital city of Abuja before he was released.
In a chat with with IPOB's deputy, VOA reports that the Nigerian government cannot ignore the voice of Biafrans. He says May 30 will be a day for the world to recognize because pro-Biafrans will unite in peaceful resistance. Some pro-Biafrans will stay in their homes while others plan to join street rallies.
He said, “The compliance on that day will indeed convince the world that the people of Biafra are actually ready for their self-governance. We have our right to self-existence and it doesn’t matter what anybody things about it.” he told VOA.
From the foregoing, VOA has helped to create global awareness for the ongoing agitation for Biafra restoration as it has been widely reported and syndicated by other conventional and online media across the world.
Chances are that the US President, Donald Trump and other world leaders are now officially aware of the ongoing agitation which may in turn spark a debate and resolution by the UN any time soon.
