The Senate has praised Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to high heavens, for the successful passage of the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill, PIGB.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Senator Tayo Alasoadura, commended the dedication of the members of the Committee, especially the commitment of Saraki. for breaking the age long jinx.
Senator Alasoadura, disclosed that Saraki told him at the beginning of the 8th Senate, that he was determined to break the PIB Jinx, as it remained one his strong passion, and Consultants were contacted to meet with different stakeholders, to ensure everyone’s interest was captured.
“Saraki was the one that set up the consultancy outfit that started the work on this PIGB we have today. As soon as they worked to large extent, the Senate President brought me in for the Consultants to brief me on how far they had gone, and we took it up from there” said Alasoadura.
Also, the Senator representing Ondo Central, stated further, that to avoid the mistake made by previous Senate Assemblies on the passage of the PIGB, the two arms of government (Legislature and Executive), took ownership of the Bill from the beginning, and it came to a stage where the two Committees met and almost became one, trying to agree on the clause by clause deliberations on the Bill.
According to the Senator, the interest of Nigerians was paramount in the minds of the Committees, as they worked hard day and night to ensure the 17year-old jinx was broken.
Senator Alasoadura said: “We wanted Nigerians to have a better deal in the oil industry, there was no transparency, no efficiency, and we asked ourselves how we can do things differently to make a change in our time.”
He added that, some Senators were initially against the Bill’s progression, due to local interests, but after due explanation by the Committee, it became clearer that the passage of the PIGB was in the interest of everyone, including the host communities.
Senator Alasoadura, said other Bills to come up in the report, include the host communities, fiscal, and the upstream and downstream sector.
