Press freedom since Buhari assumed power in 2015 has worsened in Nigeria and has been on a steady decline on the world ranking from 111 to 116 barely two years into the life of his administration, Reporters without Borders (RSF) has reported.
This was contained in the international press freedom index released by the orgnisation, which ranked Nigeria 122 out of 180 countries examined.
In the first quarter of 2017, Nigeria fell abysmally again thus entering the red zone from 116 to 122.
“In Nigeria, it is nearly impossible to cover stories involving politics, terrorism, or financial embezzlement.
There have been many reported cases of harassment and imprisonment of newsmen who are subjected to arrest, detention, physical violence and often placed on restriction to obtain information by the government, RSF observed.
“The all-powerful regional governors are often their most determined persecutors. As Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria nonetheless has more than 100 independent media outlets.
“Online freedom was recently curbed by a cyber-crime law that punishes bloggers in an arbitrary manner,” RSF said.
However, Scandinavians countries like Norway, Sweden and Finland remain the countries with the best press freedom in the world while the hermit kingdom of North Korea, Eritrea and Syria remain the worst countries.
