Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, wants both the States and President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to collaborate with farmers, in a bid to end hunger in the country, by year 2025.
The former President, made the call at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when members of the Egba Cluster Farming Initiative, paid him a courtesy visit.
Obasanjo stated that as the Chairman of the Zero Hunger Farmers’ organisation in Nigeria, it was the resolve of the group to achieve this feat through increased food production, thereby creating “a situation where no Nigerian goes to bed, or walks about hungry again.”
He said if given support and encouragement, farmers could make food available and affordable to Nigerians, thereby creating food sufficiency in the country.
According to Obasanjo: “Governments can help the nation’s farmers meet the objective, through policy and creation of a conducive environment that will encourage food production.”
The former President, urged the delegation to first start the cluster farming with fish, poultry, cassava, and rice farms, that “are less demanding of facilities, before venturing into tree crops that have long gestation period before harvest.”
