Former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd) yesterday expressed regrets that Nigeria is still engulf in tribal, political and religious crisis 47 years after the end of the first Nigerian Civil War.
Gowon, who was in Akure, the Ondo State capital, to visit Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, as the patron of Bible Society of Nigeria, lamented that the Boko Haram killings in the Northeast, the Southern Kaduna crisis and the militants disruption of economic activities in the Nigeria Delta should not happen in a country that had gone through the civil war.
Gowon, who was the Head of State, during the Nigerian’s civil war, said: “It is unfortunate that some of these things are happening. After the civil war, I have hoped and prayed Nigeria will never again go through the experience we have gone through and you can know how disappointed one is that all these sorts of things are happening in the Northeast, Southern Kaduna and the militants in the South.”
He, however, expressed delight that the Nigeria has left the committee of countries in recession. According to him: “The country still moves on. You got to accept the situation as it is once the government and the people are determined to bring change for the better. Interestingly enough, I read in one of the newspapers that the economic board has removed Nigeria from the recession table. Is that not an encouraging thing?
