The Director-General, DG, of the Department of State Security Services, DSS, Lawal Daura, has endorsed the return of the expelled Correspondent of The Punch newspaper, Olalekan Adetayo, to the Presidential Villa.
To many political watchers, this is unprecedented, following reports of the DSS’ highhandedness and undemocratic nature of discharging its duties.
Recall, that Adetayo was on Monday, ordered out of the Villa, by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief Security Officer, Bashir Abubakar.
In a memo to the Chairman of the Correspondent’s Chapel in the Villa, by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, he said Lawal had cleared that Adetayo be allowed back to his beat.
Shehu said in the memo: “We just got a clearance from Lawal Daura, the DG SSS, to recall Lekan to the Villa.
“Please come along with him tomorrow.
“The Special Adviser on Media, Femi Adesina, and I will resolve the issues.
“Please, advice the Correspondent and the rest of your members to handle this with maturity.
“It will not help anyone to start daring the security.
“Lekan should be assured that he is safe.
“We will straighten out everything.”
Adesina, had earlier disclosed that the Media Office in the Presidential Villa, was not consulted before Abubakar took the unilateral decision to expel Adetayo.
Abubakar, had ostensibly been angered at recent reports in the Newspaper, which he deemed painted Buhari in a bad light.
