At the wake of the shocking discovery of $43 million stashed away at the 7th floor of Osborne Towers, in Ikoyi, Lagos, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has combed all the flats in the building, including that of Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.
A source revealed that EFCC operatives have searched all the luxury apartments in the building, located at number 16, Osborne road, Ikoyi.
“We did the search of all the apartments in the building, to ensure that there is no safe place for such money in the building. We had suspected that some of the tenants may be connected with such huge amount. We are not limiting the search to last week’s recovery, but searching for other leads.
“In the course of the search carried out in the apartments, the owners/tenants cooperated with the anti-graft agency,” a source familiar with the operations said.
This is even as Peter Obi, whose wife occupies the first flat in the building, has confirmed the development.
Obi said the flat belonging to his wife has been successfully searched without finding any incriminating item.
The former Governor, in a statement issued on Tuesday night by his Media Aide, Valentine Obienyem, said he is resident in Onitsha. He said the rented apartment by his wife, was usually where he stays anytime he is in Lagos.
He said: “Even though Mr. and Mrs. Obi had travelled to the United States and the United Kingdom for speaking engagements, when we relayed the message of the search to him, he quickly sent the keys to the four-bedroom apartment to the EFCC via courier. He even left instructions that we should allow them to also search his Onitsha residence, should there be need for that.
“After the thorough searching, nothing was found in the apartment.”
There were reported claims that the recovered loot belongs to the nation’s external secret police.
This claim has also drawn a lot of criticisms from a cross section of the society, particularly Lawyers.
