As many eminent Nigerians especially from the southeast, south-south and recently southwest begin to lend voices to the call for the release of the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, it has been revealed that the presidency is yet to be formally contacted over the matter.
Prominent among these is Chief Nwodo, the new president of Ohaneze Ndigbo. He said although he may not agree fully with Kanu's approach or his methods, he can not fault his rights to freedom of expression, self-determination and freedom of association.
According to him, “I don’t agree with everything about Kanu or his methods, but I cannot fault his rights to freedom of expression, self-determination and freedom of association. These are undeniable rights and that is why it is called fundamental human rights. It is the principle upon which a state is built and as a father, I have to speak up for him. The way we are treated in this country is worse than the way a slave is treated.’'
Also among some prominent Nigerians calling for the release of the detained IPOB leader is the leadership of Southern Leaders Consultative Forum comprising the former Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples' Democratic Party , Chief Tony Anenih, south-south leaders and other prominent South-west leaders which issued a statement demanding his immediate release from detention.
However, the southeast governors in a meeting recently joined forces with other eminent Nigerians to demand Kanu's release after a visit by two prominent men of Igbo extraction, Prof Charles Soludo, former Central Bank Governor and renowned Nigerian economist Professor Charles Utomi.
Be that as it may, a presidency source who does not want his name in print revealed that none of these calling for Kanu's release has formally contacted the Presidency.
He however differed from Chief Nwodo's call for unconditional release of the detained IPOB leader adding that even if the plea for Kanu's release would be considered by the Federal Government, it will not be without conditions.
He said, “The presidency has not been reached by any group or persons from the South East on behalf of Kanu.”
On whether presidency will accede to the request if made, the source said: “I can’t say yes or no, until it is made. It is a very delicate issue. Even if the presidency will accede, it will not be without conditions.”
