The State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Orient Petroleum Resources and Elite International Investment Limited for the construction of the Anambra International Airport City.
Governor Willie Obiano signed on behalf of the State Government at a brief MoU ceremony held at the State Exco Chambers, government House, Awka.
The MoU with a total investment valued at 2 billion dollars is for the development of the Airport City that will include two runways, aircraft maintenance facility, an aviation fuel dump, airport hotel, conference center, shopping mall, industrial park among others
The project which will be done under a Build, Operate, Manage and Transfer arrangement through a Special Purpose Vehicle known as Anambra Airport Infrastructure Company limited while the equity distribution will be Sinoking investment 75 percent, Orient Petroleum 20 percent and Anambra State government 5percent.
The Airport City will situate on 1,500 hectares of land at Ivite Umueri that will later expand to neighbouring communities of Nando, Umunya, Otuocha, Aguleri, Nteje, Nsugbe and beyond.
Speaking before signing the MoU, Governor Obiano said the project is consistent with the key development pillars of his administration especially in the area of trade and commerce and Oil and Gas and has the capacity to minimize the cost and processes of importation for the teeming Anambra business community as well as unleash boundless business connections between Anambra and China.
He commended the innovation which the state's one-stop shop for investment, ANSIPPA is bringing into investment promotion in the state, adding that the investment brings to 7.8 billion US dollars, the total amount his government has attracted in investments in the past three years.
Governor Obiano while assuring that his government will give the project every necessary support it requires to succeed, said what his government aims to achieve with the project is a central economic hub not only for the State but also the SouthEast and the country at large.
Earlier, the Chairman, Sinoking Enterprises Investments Limited from China, Mrs Huang Zhi Hui whose address was read by the Deputy Head, China Aviation Planning and Designing Institute, Mr Sun Zhi He promised to deliver a quality project in line with best practices in Aviation engineering, commending the present administration's vision.
Speaking on the details of the MoU, the Chairman of ANSIPPA and traditional ruler of Umuoji, Igwe Cyril Enweze said the Airport City is in line with the State government's economic objective for the aviation sector and will help promote the rapid urbanization of Umueri and its environs, promote growth in the Oil and Gas Sector and increase Gross Domestic Product, GDP.
The Chairman of Orient Petroleum Resources and former Secretary General of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, said the project promises to be one of the most advanced airports in the world with the capacity to land every sophisticated aircraft, stressing that they were encouraged to invest in the project because of the dynamic leadership of Governor Obiano and how it is eliciting the passion of Ndi Anambra to invest in their home state.
In a vote of thanks, the Managing Director of ANSIPPA, Chief Joe-Billy Ekwunife thanked Governor Obiano for creating the enabling environment that has made it possible for investors to bring their wealth into the state.
