Amidst the setting up of a Committee headed by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to end the Executive and the Senate face-off, the Presidency has described the Senators, as a bunch of errant school children on a playground.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on social media, Lauretta Onochie, in a post on her Facebook page on Wednesday, further described the Senate as a “trade union of some sort”
This came a few hours after Buhari had set up a Presidential Committee to intervene and resolve the sour relationship between the Senate and the Executive arms of government.
Recall, that the relationship between the Senate and the Presidency, has not been cordial in recent times, with the Lawmakers coming hard on Federal Government appointees.
The Senate on Tuesday, had turned down the confirmation of 27 nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, nominated by Buhari, due to the retention of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, after his confirmation was rejected by the Senate; and the refusal of the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Hammed Ali, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, to appear before it.
Reacting the Presidential Aide said: “So, why is the Nigerian Senate acting like a bunch of errant school children in a playground?
“For not giving me a piece of your snacks, you can’t play with us. Bullying and intimidation! Many of us remember this from our primary school days. It’s back in our Senate!
“At best, the Nigerian Senate has turned itself into a trade union of some sort. Not a patriotic trade union that cares and fights for the well-being of the citizens, but a blackmailing self-serving trade union that works with blackmail!
“But there are many patriotic and people-oriented Senators in that Chamber. Where are they? Why are they silent? Why are they succumbing to the bullying antics of a few clowns, who are being manipulated by the head cabal? Yes, the cabal!
“What are the patriotic Senators doing to let Nigerians know that they are not part of the unholy and demonic alliance of the awaiting trial cabal? How can they sit pretty, and allow those who are either under criminal investigations or are awaiting trials, to be the ones deciding the fate of Nigerians?
“Unless the good elements in the Senate begin to speak up and dissociate themselves from the cabal, Nigerians will think and believe they are all the same.
“President Buhari has the right to choose who should serve Nigerians. It’s within his constitutional rights. Arm twisting and blackmail will not succeed over patriotic considerations. They have forgotten their principal role of law making. Where are the two bills President Buhari sent to the Senate in January of 2016?”, she asked.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, Itse Sagay, also on Wednesday, questioned why the Senate should summon him.
The Senate had following a statement credited to Sagay, describing the institution as being “childish and irresponsible” and a Senate “filled by people of questionable character,” summoned him to appear before it.
However, Sagay was quoted as saying in an interview on Wednesday, that the Senate has no power or authority to summon him, adding that, he was not in the category of persons they can summon.
