Police hierarchy in Imo State has expressed its readiness to bring to book two fleeing commissioners in the Governor Rochas Okorocha’s administration and four other government functionaries as ordered by an Owerri Federal High Court in an arrest warrant issued last week.
Justice Lewis Allagoa, had on March 14 issued a warrant of arrest on the affected government officials in a matter involving a former Interior Minister,Captain Emma Ihenacho and the state government as contained in suit No FHC/OW/CS/133/2016, over the demolition of his property located at Orlu road, Owerri.
The government officials are Josephine Udoji, Commissioner for Works and Transport; Lawrence Eburuo, Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Planning; Nwaogu Chidiebere, General Manager, Owerri Capital Development Authority(OCDA); Emeka Duru, Head of Department(Works) government house; Chibuzor Iwuagwu of Power and Housing and C. E Egbuka, a Director in the ministry of Works and Transport.
All were sighted for contempt of court following their alleged refusal to honour the court’s summons, compelling them to appear before it in respect of the alleged demolition of Iheanacho’s property.
While ordering the police to produce the persons before him on May 2, the judge said that the affected persons had refused to appear before the court to explain why they would not be convicted for contempt for disobeying the order of the court to stop the demolition of the property of the former minister of interior, Ihenacho pending the determination of the substantive suit.
However, Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu has vowed to arrest the affected persons if served with the order of court. Lakanu said: “I have not been served with the court order. As a lawyer and Commissioner of Police, I cannot go against an order of a court of competent jurisdiction. Once I am served, I will arrest the contemnors.”
