The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has tactically apologised to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, for the elapses associated with the conduct of the 2015 General Elections, that led to his defeat by the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress, APC.
The Electoral Commission through its National Commissioner in Charge of Voters Education and Publicity, Solomon Adedeji, on Wednesday, in a programme aired by the African Independent Television, AIT, titled: “Focus Nigeria”, and monitored by Post-Nigeria.
While speaking, INEC promised to conduct a credible poll in the forthcoming 2019 General Elections, in less in 24 months.
“We witnessed a lot of lapses in the last general elections that saw to the defeat of the then incumbent. We here by apologised to Nigerians for the shortcoming, and promised to conduct a better and more reliable election in 2019, where everybody’s votes will count”, Adedeji said.
On the replacement of the 33 Resident National Electoral Commissioners whose tenure expired, he reiterated that the Electoral body has already written to the current administration for their replacement.
“We have already informed the Buhari government that the tenure of 33 RECs have expired. I know they are not unmindful of that.”
States that currently have no RECs are: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara, among others.
