No fewer than 20 pensioners in Benue State were reported to have died during protests over nonpayment of their gratuity and entitlements in the last one year.
This is as the state government, spoke through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) that there was no money to pay the pensioners now.
Vice-Chairman of the “Concerned Pensioners” in the state, Mrs. Stella Sarah Peters, broke the sad news to journalists yesterday at the end of a three-day protest, organised by the group to demand payment of accumulated unpaid benefits and gratuity.
She lamented that following the unpaid entitlement, the pensioners were unable to purchase drugs, pay their children’s school fees, as well as feed their families, a development she added, resulted to the major cause of their frequent death.
While urging the government to respond without further delay to save them from their untimely death and illness, Mrs. Peters said: “Last year, we lost 20 of our members, who collapsed during protests and were rushed to the hospital where they were confirmed died. Indeed, this happened mainly because they had no money to treat themselves.”
