Senate President, Bukola Saraki’s trusted Ally, and former Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Thursday, December 1, through a unanimous decision of the Executive Committee of the North geopolitical zone, was picked to replace Lai Mohammed, as the new Spokesperson, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The election of Abdullahi, a known Ally to Saraki, according to sources, is aimed at cementing the significantly improved relationship between Saraki, and the Presidency, especially now that President Muhammadu Buhari has allegedly fallen out with his political father, Bola Tinubu, ahead of 2019.
The improved relationship with his party, and the Presidency, has also seen Saraki become a frequent guest to the Presidential Villa, to hold closed door meetings with the President.
Most times, he is seen beaming with smiles as he speaks to the State House Correspondents.
Recall, that the Presidency had in October, dropped the forgery charges against the Saraki, amidst allegations that it was done, because of his improved relationship with the Presidency.
The dropping of the charges was hailed by several APC Chieftains, including former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and National Leader of the party, Tinubu.
Not only that, the on-going Code of Conduct, CCT, trial, was surprisingly shifted to next year, all in in a ploy to give him soft landing.
Recall, that Saraki, while serving as Governor of Kwara State, had appointed Abdullahi, as Commissioner for Education.
Abdullahi, was also appointed Minister of Sports, by former President, Goodluck Jonathan, on the recommendations of Saraki.
However, when Saraki defected to the APC, it became impossible for Jonathan to retain the services of Abdullahi, due to his closeness to the Senate President.
He was fired by the President, despite being seen as one of the shining lights of that administration. He subsequently moved to the APC
However, apart from his closeness to Saraki, one major factors that helped Abdullahi emerge as the APC Spokesperson, is the existing zoning formula in the party.
The party had in June 2014, adopted a zoning arrangement for all its National offices.
Based on the arrangement, the South-South produced the National Chairman, while the North-East, produced the National Secretary.
The Deputy National Chairman, was zoned to the South-West; National Treasurer to the North-West; and National Publicity Secretary, North-Central zones, respectively.
After the National zoning arrangements, the regions also micro zoned Executive offices, and the National Publicity Secretary, was zoned to Kwara State.
