Following the poor power supply recorded in 2016, and the inability of the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to ameliorate the situation, the Presidency has earmarked a whopping sum of N223 million, to take care of power Generating Plants (Generators), at the State House, and other strategic offices in the Presidency, for 2017.
The 2017 Appropriation Bill, which President Muhammadu Buhari presented to the joint session of the National Assembly recently, made a provision of N436, 853,111 for the normal electricity charges, and an additional allocation of N223, 523,996 for its alternative power solutions (Generators).
According to the budget estimate, under the alternative power plan, the sum of N103,869,296 has been earmarked for fueling its numerous power generating plants; N49,654,700 has been set aside for the maintenance of the generators, while the sum of N70 million will be spent on the purchase of new generators.
A glance at the details of the budget proposal, shows that the bulk of the electricity charges to the tune of N319, 625,753, will be expended at the State House, Abuja, while another N15, 320,000 will be spent at the State House, Lagos Liaison Office.
In addition, the State House, Abuja, will spend N45, 540,000 fueling power generating plants, and N6, 148,000 has been provided for the maintenance of the plants.
The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, has been allocated the sum of N62.4 million for its electricity charges during the coming year; Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, has N12 million; while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been allocated the sum of N62,760,000, for the same line item.
Other agencies that would share in the huge electricity bill include: the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Sustainable Development Goal, SDGs, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, NEITI, Nigeria Atomic Energy Agency, NAEA, and the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser to the President.
Two agencies, namely the EFCC and NEITI, have special provisions for the purchase of new power generating sets, as they shared N50 million and N20 million, respectively on this line item.
